Poeta, dramaturga e historiadora estadounidense. Hermana de James Otis, no recibió educación formal y sin embargo fue una mujer letrada, amiga y corresponsal de importantes personalidades políticas. Comentó los temas del día en sátiras políticas, piezas de teatro y panfletos. Aunque partidaria de la guerra de independencia, se opuso a la constitución, con el argumento de que el poder debían detentarlo los estados. Su obra más importante, History of the Rise, Progress, and Termination of the American Revolution [Historia del ascenso, progreso y término de la guerra de independencia de los Estados Unidos] (3 tomos, 1805), abarca el lapso entre1765 y 1800.
